Hundreds of people got together to celebrate an African wedding that was somewhat unique.   A 112-year old man in Somalia married  17-year old girl, getting the attention, support and scorn of observers worldwide.

Ahmed Muhamed Dore has 13 kids with five wives.  But five women are not enough, as he chose to take on a sixth bride to sow his oats one last time.  Safia Abdulleh is the “lucky” lady, marrying a man who is old enough to be her great great grandfather.

“Today God helped me realize my dream,” Mr Dore said after the wedding.

The bride’s family says that she is happy to be with her new husband.   Dore says that he didn’t force the woman to marry him.  He’s known the girl since he was born when he was just 95 years old, but he waited until she was an adult to propose marriage.

“I didn’t force her, but used my experience to convince her of my love; and then we agreed to marry,” the groom said.

Some wonder if the marriage was allowed under Islamic law, and are concerned about the young woman’s age.

Dore told the BBC he was born in Dhusamareeb in central Somalia in 1897.  His birth certificate is written on goat skin.  He is a former police officer, serving after Somalia became independent in 1960.

Dore has 114 children and grandchildren and his oldest son is 80 years old.   He also expects to have more children with his new bride.

"It is a blessing to have someone you love to take care of you," he said.
