It’s 25°F (-4°C) degrees outside. You stand half-naked on a frozen lake staring at a big hole cut in the thick ice and wonder how the heck you got into this mess.
You take a deep breath before you plunge into the hole.
The shock is unbelievable.
You feel a surge of adrenaline run through your body accompanied by a sense of fear.
The only thing you hear in your head is ‘GET OUT!’
Believe it or not, swimming in a hole in the ice really does you the world of good. Apparently, ice swimming is great for your health. It’s supposed to improve circulation, strengthen the immune system, improve respiration and lower blood pressure and stress as well as alleviate aches and pains.
In Finland you will regularly see men in their twilight years plunging into the ice, swearing that it keeps them young. One thing is for certain, this process rejuvenates the body and once you have done it yourself, you might just become a believer.
Ice swimming is currently enjoying something of a renaissance in Finland, even among the young. It has traditionally been something that older people enjoyed, but recent generations have made swimming in icy water rather more fashionable. It’s no longer all about toughening you up, a ritual or being macho, but simply an incomparable energy boost.
Konsta Linkola writes about it,
Winter swimming is an old tradition in Finland and when I spent 10 days in Lapland with some friends I wanted to photograph this short series of photos about it. The water is usually around 4 degrees celcius and often people go to the sauna before and/or after swimming. It is not only good for your health but also a great way to clear your mind from trouble and stress.
