These vibrant and intimate photographs capture the first Indian lesbian wedding to have taken place in America. And they are truly beautiful. Love can conquer all and if we step into love we can see how small this world really is. Shannon and Seema are a typical couple, at least to themselves. They are an interracial couple of Indian and American descent who found love at first sight.
Shannon saw Seema at a fitness class she teaches. She then turned to a fellow instructor and said "I’m going to marry her." 6 years later, they married, and it was beautiful. While the nation is swiftly moving towards passing pro-LGBT legislation, the Indian community is still highly conservative, especially with sensitive issues like sexual orientation.
Shannon and Seema’s wedding was captured on camera by photographer Steph Grant, who specialises in LGBT weddings.
Now, the happy couple shares the story of that special day in their own words:
We are a typical couple, at least to us. We are an interracial couple of Indian and American descent who found love at first sight. Well, let’s make that Shannon found love at first sight. The day I met Seema, I was teaching one of my boot camp classes and I turned to another instructor and said “I’m going to marry her.” Of course, Seema fell in love shortly after, and six years later it became true.
For them love can conquer all and if they step into love they see how small world really is.
This decision of getting married with a girl was very tough for Seema because she is from India, a country where she was born and only saw traditional weddings. This wedding was really challenging for both Shannon and Seema but the power of Love gave them enough courage to follow there heart.
Since Seema is Indian, one of the biggest things for her was to have a traditional North Indian ceremony. Growing up in an Indian family she only saw Indian wedding ceremonies, so naturally she wanted the same thing. In this culture, there are many celebrations that lead up to the big day of course.
Shannon wanted a bit of the classic American experience at the wedding, and was walked down the aisle by her mother.
As the photos show, there was not even a hint of shame or fear at the occasion. Seema's family carried her to the wedding venue on a traditional 'Doli' by her family', and the ceremony featured ancient Hindu traditions.
Their traditional Indian ceremony featured many ancient traditions.
Including a traditional interpretation of ‘tying the knot’.
Shannon and Seema also exchanged rings.
And although there’s no ‘first kiss’ in an Indian ceremony, Shannon and Seema found time for that later.
Later, at the reception, there was time for toasts.
And their first dance.
And as Steph Grant said, it is clear to see that Shannon and Seema are both very much loved and in love.Meet Newly Wed Couple Shannon and Seema.
“If you love someone enough to spend your life with them, you can create exactly what you have always dreamed of. Always follow your dreams and create the future you want,” -Shannon and Seema
